Product notities

David O and The Ghost Road Company are long-time fixtures of Los Angeles' grass-roots theatre community.  The music on this album was created, in collaboration with sound designer Cricket S. Myers, to be performed live as a part of the play Stranger Things, which premiered in September 2011 at the Atwater Village Theater after multiple workshops at the same location, the Bootleg Theater, and the Ko Festival of Performance in Amherst, Massachusetts. The play was performed by the actors: Christel Joy Johnson, Katharine Noon, Doug Sutherland, and Brian Weir, accompanied by David O on prepared piano.  The soundscape heard on this recording was played back digitally as ambient sound for the majority of the production. The lyrics and text of the play were created by Ghost Road, O, and writer/director Ronnie Clark, through a series of improvisations and group writing exercises.  The music was likewise mostly created improvisationally in an attempt to evoke the cold, harsh landscape in which the play is set. Stranger Things is a quintessential Ghost Road Company creation. An experimental, ensemble-devised, world premiere play inspired by the writings of existential philosopher Albert Camus, layered with graphic novel stylings and reality-blurring dimensions. "Strindberg meet Rod Serling... and just when the story seems predictable, it twists into something genuinely chilling." -- Charlotte Stoudt, Los Angeles Times Composer David O, 'our town's most prolific new composer for the new century' (ReviewPlays.com), is a musical boundary-breaker, a Left Coast masher-upper of the sacred and the silly, the profound and the profane.  His compositions for the theatre have ranged from a cappella soundscape (Hippolytos) to contemporary rock (Imagine, The Legend of Alex) to polytonal music for toy piano (The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip) to fugues for kazoos and rusty metal objects (Ubu Roi). His first major choral composition, A Map of Los Angeles, commissioned and performed by the LA Master Chorale at Walt Disney Concert Hall, a 'mostly irreverent, zany, scatting, Latin-grooving, and in the end, touching, jaunt through the city was a hit when unveiled here in May 2008 -- and it sounded even more winning and fun upon a second hearing.' -- Los Angeles Times The music composed for Stranger Things represents some of O's most sparse and haunting music to date.  'David O has crafted sparse and spectral underscoring, in addition to a hauntingly simple waltz and a few piercing songs. The songs are fragmentary and Brechtian, cold and isolated, like the frigid environment in which the play is set. David O is himself a dead and ghastly figure, hunched over the keys, invisible to the characters in the play. ' -- Compositions on Theater, Sarah Taylor Ellis Los Angeles-based Sound Designer Cricket S. Myers received the 2011 Drama Desk Award and a Tony Nomination for her design of Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. And in Los Angeles, she has been nominated for a total of 13 Ovation Awards. The nominations include: The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Little Dog Laughed, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, Grace and Glorie, Mary's Wedding, Trying, Norman's Ark, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Emergency, Cousin Bette, Battle Hymn, dark play or stories for boys, and The Bacchae. For this production, "Cricket S. Myers' soundscape of whirling winds, haunting whispers, and gasping breaths still echoes in my head today." -- Compositions on Theater, Sarah Taylor Ellis.
