Product notities

The second album is dangerous territory for any songwriter. The expectation is that their second effort will be better, more fully realized and higher quality. But why? The old adage says that a songwriter has their entire life to write their first album and then two years to repeat the task. It is, all in all, a recipe for disaster and tends to separate long-term artists from the one-hit wonders. 'Little Victories', the first album by singer/songwriter Cyle Talley was, by and large, a little known entity. Though successful in the small college town he resides, it had little radio play and was mostly a disc listened to and enjoyed because of it's kitschy production, left-of-center songwriting aesthetic and his remarkable weekly shows during which he routinely destroyed his guitar, the songs and sometimes, himself. 'I think, overall, it's fine,' says Talley of his first album. 'It's the sound of me attempting to find my voice as a songwriter. When I wrote the thing, I was still learning to play the guitar, still learning how to piece things together. I was in this little room, sitting in front of a laptop, pushing the 'Record' button on Garage Band and playing until all the individual pieces sounded right. Again, it's fine, but 'Lies' is something completely different.' Something completely different indeed. His second release, 'Lies I've Told To People I've Loved' is the sound of a songwriter who has not only found his voice, but is not afraid to speak his mind with it plainly, clearly and honestly. It also marks for Talley, a sharp left turn in instrumentation and sound. Where 'Little Victories' was largely an acoustic affair with the occasional experimental flair, 'Lies' is a thoroughly electric affair, one that is more direct, focused and pointed in it's arrangements and sound. Recorded at Scooter's Place Studios with the inimitable Scott Smith co-producing and engineering, Talley produced, performed and recorded the vast bulk of guitar, drums, bass and vocals which gives 'Lies' it's raucous and cohesive feel. Adding the talents of Jack Maynes on piano, Tim Farrell on trumpet and Tom Murray on lead guitar only serves to add more frenetic energy to various tracks. However, for all of it's various instrumentation and production, the focus is squarely on Talley's unique brand of songwriting- a loquacious blend of wit, astute observation and cleverness that serve to pepper his songs with layers of meaning and lyrics that listeners can't help but engage themselves in. 'It's probably a bad crutch,' Talley shrugs when asked about his literary style. 'As a listener, I want lyrics that I can attach myself to and identify with. Rhyme schemes are all well and good, but if they don't tell me a story, if they don't paint for me a clear picture, well...' he trails off, chuckling. 'I'll just say that, despite my best efforts, being an English major has given me an internal editor that I can't seem to ignore.' It would seem as though that internal editor has served Talley well on 'Lies I've Told to People I've Loved'. The five songs center around failed and failing communication, people who can't seem to understand one another. The single, 'Golden Coast' bears a central refrain that best displays this central disconnect, 'These are the things that I will tell her when she's gone- between us there was no love found or lost.' 'People have asked me, with some concern, what the title of the EP means,' explains Talley of the album's moniker. 'Essentially, it's an album about two years of heartbreak- whether mine or otherwise.' It would seem as though heartbreak has found, through 'Lies I've Told To People I've Loved', a most excellent outlet.
