Product notities

'The Reprieve' could be referred to as a dedications and inspirations album as the majority of material was inspired by places (Beaulieu), books (The Reprieve, New York Trilogy, Women) and people Scip (John Scofield), Adams '47 (John Adams). Also included on the CD are two arrangements of contemporary popular compositions written by inspirational musicians (Bob Marley and Tom Waits). 'The Reprieve' highlights the group's 2003 repertoire, and covers a diverse mixture of styles. Wilner's own compositions span between swing, funk, modal as well as ambient, through composed pieces. The recording evolved as a result of a successful tour of the UK in Spring 2003. Audiences responded with enthusiasm at all venues and the group's initiative to play something slightly different from the norm was very well received. As a result of the tour, Wilner was included in a list of ten up and coming jazz musicians in Jazz Review's November 2003 issue. Born in Perth, Western Australia in 1973, Wilner began his music education at the University of Western Australia where he completed First Year of Western Music in 1991. Following this, he obtained a Certificate of Music with High Distinction from the Australian Institute of Music (Sydney) in 1992. He continued his studies at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts where, in 1993, he completed a Certificate of Music (Jazz Performance), and in 1997 finished an Associate Degree of Music (Jazz Performance) with High Distinction. Wilner received a grant from ARTSWA in 1999 to record original compositions, culminating in the release of 'A thought of NYU', his first compilation of modern jazz inspired by experience in New York, released in 2000. Since arriving in London Blake Wilner has been performing regularly with his quartet as well as working as a freelance musician and teacher. He has performed at many of the top jazz venues and festivals in the U.K. and Europe. Prior to moving to the UK from Australia, he spent several months in New York studying, listening and playing with musicians such as Rufus Reid, Richie De Rosa, Mick Goodrick, Kenny Wessell and Jeff Ciampa, all of whom expressed great enthusiasm towards his compositions and sense of musicianship. In 2003 Wilner completed a successful Spring tour of England and Wales. Sponsored by Jazz Services UK and the Musicians Union, Wilner's quartet featured Danish drummer Jacob Smedegaard, English born saxophonist Simon Allen and Oli Hayhurst on bass. The quartet performed original repertoire from Wilner's second compilation of modern jazz, 'The Bookshop', together with new compositions and contemporary arrangements of music by such diverse artists as Bob Marley and Tom Waits. Venues included TY's (Birmingham), Café Jazz (Cardiff), Jazzland (Swansea), Norden Farm Centre (Maidenhead), Barbican Jazz Café (Plymouth), Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Restormel Arts, Gaia Energy Centre and the City of London Festival. He was subsequently featured in the November 2003 edition of Jazz Review, in an article highlighting '10 musicians you must hear'. The quartet showcases the talents of English saxophonist Simon Allen. Allen is a recent graduate of the Royal Academy of Music who in his young career has appeared at major UK venues and festivals with an array of top musicians including Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Wheeler, Iain Ballamy and Django Bates. He performs as a regular member of the Clark Tracey band and is one of the rising stars of the UK music scene. Oli Hayhurst, on double bass, was a founding member of the Orient House ensemble with Gilad Atzmon, in which he toured extensively in the UK and Europe. His diversity has seen him perform with Paul McCartney, John Paricelli and Martin Speake. Hayhurst is considered amongst the finest young bass players performing in jazz today and is thus one of the most in demand freelance musicians in London and abroad. Jacob Smedegaard, also a graduate from the Royal Academy, is featured on drums. He is an award winning percussionist whose family name has long been associated with European contemporary music. Smedegaard also has his own electronic/acoustic band called Blooq, which toured Europe in summer 2002 and was invited to play at several renowned festivals in 2003. He has been a member of the Blake Wilner Quartet since 2001. Press - 'Here is some very poignant, melodious music, yet it is so urbane that it leaves behind the bittersweet after-taste of the near-death experience. The quartet has delivered in The Reprieve a decidedly refined work of cultured, inspired, original, modern jazz.' JazzNotes2004 from Ken Cheetham 'Throughout the album, through his compositions and his playing, Wilner shows how a diversity of influences can be melded into a singular sound; while his roots are varied, Wilner's playing has clear focus. The Blake Wilner Quartet is a showcase for a group of young up-and-comers on the European jazz scene. They completed a UK tour in 2003 before recording this album and it shows. There is a sense of interplay that can only come from an intimate knowledge of each other's musical approaches. With The Reprieve, Blake Wilner shows that the term 'American Tradition' is a misnomer; while jazz roots began, unquestionably, on American soil, artists from around the world are now assimilating these roots with their own experiences, their own folk traditions, to create something altogether new.' Reviewed by John Kelman (ejazz news, Jazz Review, Jazz Views) 'He manages to combine an airy melodic nature with a darkly complex squirt of acid restlessness... Whilst leavening the jazz chops with outside rock and funk elements, Blake doesn't compromise his stance as a firm individualist.' Martin Longley, Jazz Review November 2003 (Ten Musicians You Have to Hear) 'It is great to see spirited young bands like the Blake Wilner Group appearing live - the combined skills of the individual artists make wonderfully refreshing and inspiring sounds yet also manage to connect with their audience, taking them to another level of enjoyment. With creative musicians like these keeping interest in contemporary jazz alive, you can be assured that the future is bright.' Sue Richardson, Development Director North Cornwall Arts 2003 'The Blake Wilner Quartet's first visit to Cornwall was a triumph. These rising stars of the contemporary jazz scene played some of the most exciting and dynamic music I've heard for some time. Blake's compositions and arrangements were well structured and multi-layered and the musicianship was excellent. Blake Wilner's fluid and melodic patterns beautifully complimented Simon Allen's superb sax solos. The tight rhythm section of Oli Hayhurst - double bass and Jacob Smedegaard - drums gave the ensemble a polished and uplifting feel. Blake's original material, much inspired by books he's read, showcased a talent for composition with melodic themes underpinned by delightful rhythms and cutting edge riffs. This is music to move and enthral and I for one want them back soon.' Phil Webb, Director Restormel Arts 2003.
