Princess & the Paparazzo
In August and September of 1997 myself, my first daughter, and my Mother were in a hotel in Guangzhou finalizing the adoption of my second daughter. We were all watching Chinese TV when we saw a very sad, tall fellow with a huge stack of newspapers. He was reading from each paper and holding up the pictures. We soon realized that Princess Diana was in a horrible car accident and judging from the tone of the Chinese speaker, must indeed be dead. The counterpoint between this tragedy and the happiness of adopting another Chinese child made a huge impression upon me. When we returned to the U.S., I began writing fragments of a musical celebrating Diana's life and about her imagined impact upon one impressionable paparazzo.
