Zen Dog Live at the Culture Room
In 1999, the bastard son of Joni Mitchell made mad love to the daughter of an aging 90's alt. Rock heathen. They named their offspring Zen Dog. Although it's father was older and loved language above music, it's mother was childlike and only wanted to sing and dance. They all got along splendidly. But the child was difficult and refused to obey orderly categories and trends. It insisted on trying to balance different styles of music - creating songs that were laden with catchy lyrics and danceable music! Wending it's way through the desolate South Florida club scene was making it gloomy and cranky, so the child decided to concentrate on writing and recording music; on listening to and communicating with it's many illustrious friends, many of whom were Goblins and Faeries; in a word - this child wanted to have a really excellent time! Since releasing their first album, It Is What It Is, Zen Dog has been doing exactly that - having a great time! Now this child is growing up. With their upcoming release of ZEN DOG LIVE, their third album - and first for Live Discs - the child seems ready at last to kill it's parents. Rock is Dead - Long Live Rock!! Band Members: (The Mighty Three!) Julie Klein - Bass and Vocals Julie began her musical life at the piano, but has always loved to sing. She wrote her first music at an extremely young age and began writing pop songs shortly thereafter. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, she began a string of stints in original bands as a singer/songwriter/keyboard player. New England got too cold so she switched terrain and instruments but still can't stop singing! 'This is my best band yet, and I am totally psyched! Besides, the bass has only four strings so it's easier (I'm lazy)!' says the girl in the group! Larry Ellington - Guitars, Vocals. Born in Louisville Kentucky and Raised in San Antonio Texas, Larry picked up a guitar at age 9 (A Christmas gift) and never put it down. After lessons and obsessive practicing and playing along with recordings by such diverse influences as Deep Purple, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Eagles, Blondie, The Pretenders and Black Sabbath. He began honing his skills in local clubs in South Texas. After attending the renowned Musicians Institute in Los Angeles. After L.A. he a hit the road with various popular regional rock acts and toured eastern United States for over 6 years. Having done the 'club grind' his focus is now the South Florida original rock/pop/alternative band Zen Dog!
