Wheatfield is a five-piece band that plays just about everything. The CD covers the whole breadth of styles that Wheatfield has cultivated over the years. We have resisted labels throughout our history, though the term Americana comes closer than most. "Wheatfield music," is closer, but unless you've heard us, that wouldn't mean a lot to you. We chose the CD title "Odyssey" for several reasons: partly to commemorate the musical odyssey the group has been on since it's inception, partly to honor the Eugene, OR coffee house where Wheatfield was born and partly to call attention to our song 'Three Cheers for Penelope,' based on the epic poem the Odyssey. We started as a folk duo in 1971, and expanded membership and styles to encompass rock and roll, country, country rock, bluegrass, blues, Cajun, pop, reggae and even jazz. At each turn, we've increased our scope rather than abandoning styles as we explored new territory, constantly expanding into new areas of music and writing new material. This CD provides a good cross-section of our journey, and yet all songs are clearly identifiable as 'Wheatfield music.' We hope you enjoy it.
