Waiting on Trial
'After hearing good things for months, I finally saw my first Waiting on Trial show the other night. Mostly, 'til this recent show, I've seen them in and around Durango, Colorado - where they make their home. Sometimes I would see them fishing and other times playing music - good music. It's old timey with that youthful energy that old timey music had before old people were the only ones playing it. Chris Lane brings his own 3-finger style banjo to the group. Vocally it's Eric Elliot that shines. Though the band brings together fine harmonies, Eric's lead vocals are strong and ring true with a classic vaudeville tone, hinting of a time gone on. Bringing the names mentioned thus far to a quintet are Ryan Doty on guitar, Robin Davis on fiddle, and Ryan Zernis on bass. The group focuses heavily on songwriting, and performs mostly original material. As a collective whole, Waiting on Trial is a welcome addition to the acoustic scene, in Durango and beyond. Not quite bluegrass and not quite old time - they're the Animas River in a spring flood; they're the La Plata Mountains in a dusting of October snow; they're a grove of Ponderosas in a summer fire - you know it's going to happen eventually, but you never really know what it'll be all about. All you can do is sit back and take it in.'- David Smith, Sweet By & By Bluegrass KDUR.
