Soon after, they were making guest appearances and perform full concerts at local and regional churches. In 2006, The Velazquez Family Singers entered the McDonald's Gospelfest Competition at the New York City Center and, to the amazement of many, this single father and his three children not only won a slot in this contest which auditioned over 80,000 applicants, they also won First Place in the Group Category. As a result, The Family made their first television appearance on the UPN-My9, New York broadcast of the 2006 McDonald's Gospelfest, which also featured Gospel superstars Donnie McClurkin, Vickie Winans, Tye Tribbett, Hezekiah Walker, and Cissy Houston. In 2007, the Family Singers won McDonald's Gospelfest again, this time at New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom. Also in 2007, The Velazquez Family Singers, along with the Children of God Choir, traveled to Germany for their first European Tour. Later that year, Velazquez children team up with "Keedz" to record a CD, which first single, "Stand On The Word," lead by Alexia Velazquez, was released in Europe on Universal Records, France. At the 2007 Black Girls Rock Awards, held at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Victoria and Alexia Velazquez opened the show with a special rendition of "I'm Every Women." Black Girls Rock, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is best summed up by it's motto "Don't just look like a model, be one!" This year, awards will be given to Susan L. Taylor - Editorial Director of Essence Magazine; Sylvia Rhone - music mogul and pioneer (especially for black female record executives); rap icon - Missy Elliot. In 2008, the Velazquez children worked with Sarah Dash of the legendary group, "LaBelle" on Sarah's soon-to-be released gospel project. The Family Singles also finished recording their first Gospel CD entiled 'Family & Friends' featuring 8 songs written by dad - Victor Velazquez. The Velazquez children could sing before they were able talk in complete sentences. With both parents having such strong musical background - Barbara Douglas, a recording artist and winner of the 2007 McDonald's Gospelfest: Female Soloist; and Opera Singer Victor Velazquez, the kids had a great musical start. Now in 2009, at the ages of 13, 11, and 9, the children, along with Dad, are appearing at national and international venues, making the most of every opportunity. May God Continue to Bless The Velazquez Family Singers.
