Line up: Bert Lochs: trumpet, flugelhorn, live electronics Florian Zenker: guitar Jasper Somsen: Double bass Lydia van Dam: vocals Recorded live 2010. Recording engineer: Guido Nieuwdorp. Mixed by Ron Kesteloo and Jasper Somsen. Mastered by Bastiaan Kuijt. Label: Music Under Construction The press about 'Live' and Bert Lochs Lochs impresses with his warm tone and dramatic feel. The CD starts beautifully with a full brassband (thanks to electronics), playing a soulful spiritual evolving into full swinging jazz. With his own last song on the CD, The Piece, a beautiful homage to Miles Davis, and in the middle Kitewaltz and Where is the Snow, this is the instrumental part of the CD. Because of Lochs's extended and fine playing and his smart but above all musical use of electronics, these are, in my eyes, the highlights of the CD. Lydia van Dam doesn't compare to other Dutch singers. She has an unmistakable style of her own. It has more to do with improvisation in general than with jazz in particular. She sings her own (Dutch) lyrics which radiate hopeless optimism as well as spleen. If you like that, there is a lot to enjoy. Tom Beetz, Jazzfitz Magazine 'I took notice of a huge and exceptional musical talent. Bold and headstrong, you have to dare to do it nowadays. As a trio you communicate with each other in a way that is continuously full of surprises. In an almost movielike abstract manner you show that you want much more than just to play a melody. My comparison touches upon the Nino Rota of the twenty first century.' Frits Hooft, musical adviser Public Broadcast, the Netherlands Juli 2010.
