Product notities

Trey Lane has been a vital aspect of the local music scene for years. With three albums already in his catalog and numerous shows with national acts, Lane has been able to make his presence known. This week, Lane puts all of that behind him as he leaps to the next level. Lane will release his fourth studio album, All Things Considered, on Friday. While his previous releases were impressive in their time, ATC presents a whole new side of the Sioux Falls rapper. Pulling old-school beats ("All Things Considered" reminds me of The Jackson 5) and putting his signature deep voice-often compared to the legendary Biggie Smalls-to use, the album creates a mature tone that hasn't been showcased as much. "I feel like my previous albums all had good songs, but I don't really feel like any album was that whole package," said Lane. "This album provides a broader view. It's got the highs and the lows and everything." Since he was a kid, rap music has entranced Lane. Born in Long Beach, Calif., he moved to and grew up in Sioux Falls. Lane wasn't heavily involved in the music scene until he was older, but felt an immediate draw to mainstream rappers such as Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z. "I loved that [rap music] was all about self expressions," said the 24-year-old. "You could see how people reacted to how certain artists felt about certain things. Watching concerts was always fun to me because you always got to see live emotion. I love just being able to write poetry and vocalize it. It's cool to see people relate to that." It wasn't until after high school that Lane started making his own music. Having spent a lot of his time writing and following music, he began to realize that it was something he seriously wanted to pursue. While being successful has always been his plan, his motivation grew with the birth of his daughter two years ago. "She made me want to pursue it even more," said Lane. "I thought that if this was what I wanted to do, I had to take it more seriously because now I had to provide for her. I also want to show her that anything is possible. If she says she wants to be president, I'd say go for it. This life gives us an opportunity to dream." All of Lane's music has revolved around his life and issues he's dealt with, but All Things Considered seems to show a more grown-up side. The music itself is relatable to all generations: a sort of mantra on living life to it's fullest. Like the lyrics to his title track state, "don't sweat the small things / it's all small things / embrace every moment on earth your life brings". Another feature about the album is it's quality production. It holds the same classic Trey Lane appeal, but in a more polished way. With his fourth album, Lane says it feel like he finally knows what he's doing. "[My third album,] The Standard, was a very good album. Some of my more popular songs were on that album. But I feel, overall, the music I'm making now is a lot better." Progression is the theme of Lane's career and it's clear he doesn't plan on stopping with ATC. In the future, he hopes to branch out even more and eventually start touring around with this release. With a run of dates in the works for January and more planned in March, this small-town musician is ready to take his future head-on. "Long term, I just want to be successful in whatever it is I'm doing," Lane said. "Whether it be rapping or anything. It's something I strive for, even if I end up sitting in a wheelchair when I'm old. In the end, I just want to be successful and happy."
