Toronto Sings Breithaupt Brothers Songbook / Various
The Breithaupt Brothers are Emmy-winner Don Breithaupt (music) and his NYC-based songwriting partner, Jeff Breithaupt (lyrics). Students of the Great American Songbook, they write 'neo-standards' that have been performed by Tony winner James Naughton, Grammy nominee Kate McGarry, and dozens of other A-list singers. Their new live album is the latest in a flurry of recent career signposts: Seeing Stars, their original musical comedy, just finished a sold-out run at the New York Musical Theatre Festival; two of their songs have been featured in Showtime's Emmy-nominated series The L Word; and a who's who of Canadian vocal jazz -- including Denzal Sinclaire, Dione Taylor, Joe Coughlin and Adi Braun -- have released covers of their songs since 2005. Sinclaire and Braun are part of Toronto Sings the Breithaupt Brothers Songbook, as are Tony winner Brent Carver, Atlantic Records artist Sarah Slean, renowned Kurt Weill specialist Patricia O'Callaghan, and former EMI signee Wendy Lands, whose appearance here represents her first release in seven years. 'Our Cabaret Festival show last year was one of those rare nights when magic happens, and you're actually ready for it,' says pianist/conductor Don Breithaupt. 'There were great mics all over the place, and we had a Juno-winning engineer [John 'Beetle' Bailey -- see also Sophie Milman, Molly Johnson and Serena Ryder] multitracking everything. Everyone hit it out of the park!' The Breithaupts' all-star vocal lineup is complemented by bassist Russ Boswell (Parachute Club, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Kevin Breit) and drummer Steve Heathcote (Carol Welsman, Holly Cole, Oliver Jones).
