Battlefield Poems of Banjo Paterson
Jack Thompson is mostly known as a star of many great Australian movies but his personal passion is poetry and has made it his mission to record all of Australia's classic and significant writers. This is his second album of Banjo Paterson poems. The first one was The Bush Poems of Banjo Paterson, also available from CD Baby. He has also recorded The Sentimental Bloke, the Poems of C.J.Dennis and The Campfire Yarns of Henry Lawson. Jack was in the Australian Army for six years and learned about Banjo Paterson's war poems then. Banjo went to the Boer War as a correspondent but he also did active service in World War 1 as a member of the Light Horse in Egypt, after starting out as an ambulance driver, so he was writing from first hand experience. He chose to write not so much about the death and destruction, but of the camaderie and spirit of the young Aussie soldiers, an optimistic rendering of their courage and steadfastness in the face of bloody battles. Jack's reading of the poems is similarly moving and uplifting. Jack has also chosen to record Laurence Binyon's Ode of Rememberance because of it's place in the Australian canon of commemorative works.
