There has been a long running tradition in soul music regarding the area of Philadelphia and surrounding towns. One of the longest running organizations still carrying the torch has been one that has seemingly never faded away - the best way to describe it is not as an organization but rather an institution, and that tireless entity is known as Society Hill Records - named after the historic neighborhood in Center City Philadelphia. Today, after all the years of great music that has emanated from the label, artists old and new carry on the great tradition with music that has never strayed far from the source. One of the greatest sources of talent in the Society Hill stable is the abundance of great vocalists, especially the women. From seasoned veterans like Carla Benson, Jean Carne, Tesa Williams, Fillies Finazz, Kat Fontaine, Sharon Ingram, Barbara Ingram and countless others, to uber talented newcomers such as Ter-Ree and Lady J., the Society Hill roster boasts an embarrassment of riches. Whether a track needs a lead vocalist or a background singer, all of these women have what it takes to fill any role, and they do - year after year, session after session. On the new compilation, "The Sensational Ladies of Society Hill," several of these talented women are the featured attraction, showcasing some well-known songs from the Philly Soul cannon and a few recent originals that fit the bill.
