The word "ponteios" in Brazilian music means literally "pointed" and is used to refer to a specific technique for playing the guitar in which individual notes are played rather than chords. The term is used in Brazilian music as a form for many different combinations of instruments. The first piece on the CD uses the term in this way. These three movements compose the "title tracks" of the CD for of course the flute only plays one note at a time as well! All of these pieces have been introduced or given to me over a period of years, either by the composers themselves or by people who know the composers and also know me. I was very fortunate to be introduced to the flute music of Brazilian composers by my good friend and wonderful pianist, Zelia Chueke and I became interested in finding more works by Brazilian composers. After accumulating a number of pieces in this manner, and thoroughly enjoying playing them, I realized that most of the pieces had not been recorded. I felt a responsibility to these composers and their music to introduce it more widely. I am so grateful to the composers who trusted me to interpret their works, to the fine musicians who worked with me to do this and to the recording engineers who were so patient with me in this learning process. I want to especially thank my husband, producer, and bass player on two tracks, Ranses Colon, for his support and encouragement throughout this process.
