Tchaikovsky is best-loved for his symphonic, operatic, and balletic works. With most of his opus falling into these formal genres, it comes as no surprise that he treasured the freedom of looser forms like the orchestral suite. Here he plays freely with conventions like the Baroque idioms of the fugue and theme and variations. The fourth, "Mozartiana" is all adaptations that Viennese giant's themes done up with Tchaikovsky's signature flair. Performed by the Stuttgart RSO under the expert baton of Sir Neville Marriner, this release is a must-hear.
