Sweethook was founded by Scott Cornwell, a New York Fire Department paramedic who has been building and playing electric banjos since the early seventies. Scott has developed a unique style of funky, rock banjo and has designed and built an innovative electric banjo to showcase his music. He is joined by the sweet and powerful voice of Jazelyn Montanez. Steve (The Doctor) Wortman with his rocking blues harp add a rootsy, blues flavor to the band. Scott's son Leon Campos, of the Vermont-based jam band Greyspoke, joins them on keyboards, with sounds that range from smooth jazz piano to the power of the Hammond B-3. On the bass Joe Cacciola, lead singer and songwriter of the rock band The Joe Franklins, lays down a powerful groove and adds his rich baritone to the harmony mix, as well as singing lead on a number of his own compositions. Spike Genalo on drums has been a musical co-conspirator with Joe since they were kids, looking for trouble and rocking out on the south side of Brooklyn. Spike has his own eighties cover band, White Wedding that plays regularly at prominent New York City clubs and brings a rocking rhythm to the Sweethook sound that relentlessly bullies people onto the dance floor. The sound of the whole band is anchored by the percussion work of Mr. Matt Shanley, that switches from the sweet salsa conga sound to the super funky, jungle boogie djembe and a dizzying variety of world, afro Cuban, or straight up Brooklyn beats inbetween. Sweethook comes straight outta Brooklyn with a funky, rootsy sound that is sure to rock you.
