I Hear Music
If you are an aficionado of easy listening jazz with a blend of classic jazz standards and 'joie de vivre' then this is what you will get on "I Hear Music" along with a refreshing collaborated original "Akaroa, The Place To Be." The fortuitous mix of Doug Caldwell (Legendary New Zealand pianist) and Susan De Jong [Australian Jazz songstress] showcases two fine artists in memorable harmony. Having worked together for over five years [at the CPIT Jazz School in Christchurch] and performed in concert, it made good sense that these two should take their professional synergies to a new level in recorded permanence. I have real pleasure in commending Doug and Susan for their decision to join forces on this disc which is the first official release under the internationally registered label of "POLYJAZZ RECORDINGS." Neill Pickard (Executive for Polyjazz Recordings) The versatility of Susan's voice and the magic of Doug's piano playing made this a concert to remember.....the depth of musical talent is amazing. Ralph Woodham, President, Musician's Club Christchurch. It's great to see the CPIT Jazz folks putting out stuff under their own label, and what a treat to have Doug Caldwell and Susan De Jong working together. The generous 15-track disc features pieces from My Heart Stood Still and Charlie Parker's Au Privave, with plenty in between. De Jong enjoys a high profile throughout NZ. Caldwell is, quite simply, a national treasure. It is a great opportunity for Caldwell to do what he does so well, take asimple tune and make it a miniature delight. Fool's Rush In is a beautifully paced ballad and the evergreen Ain't Misbehavin' plays seductively with Fats Waller's masterpiece, while I Hear Music gets your toe tapping. All up, well worth a listen; 3½ stars. Patrick Shepherd, The Press, Christchurch.
