This new recording from Vox Suavis is a collection of music from lost traditions. It revives the legacy of generations of anonymous musicians from the various regions of Spain, presenting a folkloric music that was once common to the rural population. The melodies and flavor of this tradition, active until the mid-twentieth century, were absorbed by composers such as Falla and Rodrigo and have become part of the national style of Spanish classical music. Also included are a much earlier example of Spanish 'popular' music, the Medieval Cantigas de amigo by Martin Codax. The juxtaposition of these two traditions, with their contrasts and connections, demonstrates the richness and variety of both styles.
