NEW TRICKS - Review "You can tell Pollard poured his heart into this. In the moments where he finds his surest footing, it's an undeniably impressive debut. NEW TRICKS is a good record with several standout tracks and more than a few magical moments. There is considerable promise in this work and I imagine many will both enjoy it and be eager to hear what Pollard cooks up next." - Kyle Meredith, Music Director, WFPK (Louisville) Stu Pollard - Bio I've always loved music. When I was 15, I was running my own DJ business in Louisville and I started rhyming words for fun shortly thereafter. A series of irreverent couplets about a lost dog named "Baked Ham" marked the first thing I ever recorded. The dog was found the next day, at least in part due to the crude recording being broadcast on my high school's PA system. The DJ business led to running sound for bands in college (Georgetown University), which is where I made lots of friends, including guitarist Doug Derryberry. While I would occasionally sit in during rehearsals, I found my talents were better utilized at the mixing console and shooting video of their performances. I developed a strong interest in film and video as a result. Twenty years later, I guess I'm best known as a filmmaker - having directed two feature films (NICE GUYS SLEEP ALONE and KEEP YOUR DISTANCE) and played a part in producing a number of others (including TRUE ADOLESCENTS and IRA & ABBY). But my love of music never waned and in fact remains one of my favorite parts of the filmmaking process. A revised rap version of the aforementioned "Baked Ham" surfaced in NICE GUYS SLEEP ALONE, while my song "Right In Front of You" was performed in KEEP YOUR DISTANCE by actor Christian Kane (TNT's LEVERAGE) with an assist from Doug (who produced the track and also appears in the film). It was while creating the soundtrack album for DISTANCE that I first teamed with the multi-talented Todd Smith whose company Label X produced the likes of Digby, the Muckrakers, Code Red, and Peter Searcy. Todd persuaded me to step into the recording studio and sing some of my own stuff. And just like that, the first seeds of NEW TRICKS were sown. Like film, I find the collaborative process the most gratifying aspect of making music. Getting to work on these songs with so many incredibly talented musicians was an amazing experience. Buoyed by my collaborators - including Todd (producer/guitar/bass) and Doug (lead guitar) Derryberry - I was able to complete seven original songs. Most draw their musical inspiration from the 70's and 80's, while lyrically they are based on affairs of the heart (though not strictly my own). As I release of NEW TRICKS, I'm simultaneously teaching film at USC, editing a slew of video content for my new website, raising money for my next feature film, and writing new music. I love college basketball and live music, prefer my beer cold and my bourbon on the rocks, and consider my friends my greatest asset. I live in Santa Monica, CA, but makes sure to get home regularly to visit family in Louisville.
