Dame Joan Sutherland's Farewell Gala & Performance
Known as "La Stupenda" (the stunning one), Dame Joan Sutherland is considered one of the great soprano divas of the 20th century along with Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi. Throughout her long career, her voice impressed with its clarion qualities, and arguably Sutherland may have been the most down to earth diva amongst the troika. This DVD captures her farewell gala concert in London at the Royal Opera House in 1990 conducted by her husband Richard Bonynge and including the complete operetta "Die Fliedermaus" by Johann Strauss which features the star studded addition of colleagues and fellow opera greats Marilyn Horne and Luciano Pavarotti in Act II. Includes bonus features of three rarely seen performances by Sutherland with the Australian Opera including 'Casta Diva' the moving aria from Bellini's "Norma" as well as arias from both Verdi's 'Il Trovatore' with the dramatic 'Mad Scene' from Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor a role that first brought Sutherland to acclaim.
