Product notities

Nancy said it was time for a Christmas CD from the Straight Ahead Big Band. We wanted to do it the last couple of years, but too many things got in the way. Stuff happens. As before we crammed the whole group into the Patchcord studio; getting most of the music recorded in one very long afternoon, Feb. 21, 2009. There was a little more work to do, and we finished recording on May 6. Thanks to everybody who helped make this all happen. Players on this CD are Bob Hansen on Piano, Tom Andrews on Bass, Dave Westfall on Guitar, and Tracy Manuel on Drums. Of course Nancy Fischer is the vocalist. Saxes are Steve Fischer, Lou Polcari, Mitch Hawley, Tyler Spencer and Ken Reed. Ruth Polcari is our flutist. Trumpets are Sal D'Acquisto, Dick Morris, George Goehner, Carlo Fazio and Paul Senn. Trombones are Todd Wright, John Schlenz, Steve Clausen, Ron Largent and Bill Corum. We are very fortunate to make music together as a group over the years. It is only with difficulty that we change. Last year we lost our long time friend and tenor sax player, Craig Williams. He was and is in our minds and hearts as we put this album together. On a much happier note, we are pleased to be featuring our new drummer, Tracy Manuel, who had never done anything like this - not too surprising since she just recently turned sixteen! She brings a fun fresh perspective to us old guys in the band. Special thanks to her mom & dad, Laura & Kent, for letting her join us and driving her to rehearsals and gigs. So here's what's on the record: (1) Amazing Grace (4:20 - Arr: Carmichael/Schlenz) John knows Frank & got his permission to 'borrow' this chart. Maybe it's not traditionally a Christmas tune, but it's a great way to start, especially with Nancy & Tom's intro. Alto solo by Steve, piano by Bob. (2) Jingle Bell Boogie (2:53 - Arr: Kidd) Just fun for everybody. Solo by Mitch on tenor. (3) Santa Baby (2:38 - Arr: Glasscock) features our lovely Nancy Fischer on a classic that seems personal to her . (4) All I Want For Christmas, 1:51 Arr: Comstock) Think of Billy May's orchestra and smile. (5) What Child Is This? (2:10 - Arr: Clark) Another fun version of an old tune - this time in 5/4to keep us all on our toes. (6) The Christmas Song (3:58 - Arr: Nowak) Nancy on Mel Torme's classic; Bob on Piano and Todd on trombone. (7) Winter Wonderland (2:54 - Arr: Wolpe) Swinging ensemble work accented by Dick Morris, Mitch & Tracy (8) White Christmas (2:38 - Arr: Holmes) The great Irving Berlin with Nancy's voice and Dick on trumpet again. (9) Joy To The World (3:43 - Arr: Owen) This isn't the way you may remember this tune, but it's sure fun. Trumpet solo by Carlo Fazio. (10) Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (4:20 - Arr: Wolpe) From Nancy and the whole band - our wish for you. (11) Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! (2:05,Arr: Comstock) This is one our dancer friends all enjoy. (12) Here Comes Santa Claus Medley (5:48 - Arr: Glasscock) There's more than a couple of songs happening here and more fun putting it together. Thanks to Ruth Polcari for her superb flute work; Bob Hansen on piano; Steve on alto; Tracy filling & driving, and tasty bass work by Tom at the end. (13) O, Holy Night(2:37, Arr: Carmichael) This one is right out of Kenton's Christmas Carols, a favorite of mine from way back, and the brass give me chills every time I hear it. (14) What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? (3:58 Arr: Harpin) A great tune and another heartfelt Nancy vocal. (15) I'll Be Home for Christmas (3:34 - Arr: Berry) We wish you a Merry Christmas, cozy and warm at home with all your loved ones. Alto solo by Steve, trumpet by Dick Morris. (16) I'll Be Seeing You (3:50 - Arr: Curnow) Somebody tried to tell us this isn't a Christmas tune, but if you have loved ones you can't be with, especially at Christmas, you'll get it. You can hear that this means a lot to Nancy. We hope you like it. Merry Christmas from all of us in the Straight Ahead Big Band. Thanks for your support.
