Love with a Proper Stranger
I have been listening to the music of Stephen R. Duhart for about seven years now. Initially I was impressed by the beauty of his music. Over the years it began to occur to me that Stephen's music was more than just a wonderful treat for the ears, it was purposeful. By purposeful, I mean that an important part of the music Stephen creates is a social or political dialogue with the listener. Sometimes, the dialogue is expressed through spoken word, whether Stephen's words, or the words of another. Just as often the dialogue is purely musical. Sometimes the dialogue is expressed through feelings created, attached to, or inspired by the music. Love with a proper stranger continues Stephen's dialogue with his listener. It is not difficult to imagine that sitting in on this latest installment of Stephen's dialogue are Martin Luther King, Jr., President Barack Obama, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder or even Prince. Ear, heart and brain must work closely to fully comprehend such wonderful, 'purposeful' music. Fret not - it is a joy. The tenth cut is the title track, Love with a proper stranger. As lovely, yet as purposeful as anything I have ever heard from Stephen. The melody alone is worth the spin -- but when joined by the lyric and vocal, it is pure bliss. The entire disc is peppered with the masterful classical guitar of Kay Ta Matsuno. The addition of Mr. Matsuno's classical guitar to this installment of Stephen's dialogue has the effect of somehow elevating the dialogue. It is as if this installment of the dialogue is taking place on the shoreline of a large, beautiful lake at a time when the waters are so still that the surface of the lake is almost mirror-like. The dialogue is the same, but the setting is surreal. The world needs music like LLove with a Proper Stranger now more than ever. I for one plan to listen to Love with a proper stranger over and over again, to feel the message, to hear the dialogue, and to have my spirit elevated in the process.
