Press Release for the CD "Three Greek Concertos for Soprano Saxophone and String Orchestra" Dinos Constantinides-Evangelos Kokkoris-Dimitri Nicolau Stathis Mavrommatis saxophone Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra Conductor Alkis Panayotopoulos Lyra Classics puts into circulation a new CD "Three Greek Concertos for Soprano Saxophone and String Orchestra" with compositions of Dinos Constantinides, Evangelos Kokkoris and Dimitri Nicolau in world premier recordings, performed by the distinguished saxophonist Stathis Mavrommatis and the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Alkis Panayotopoulos. Music pieces are: -Concerto N.2 for soprano saxophone and string orchestra (Grecian Variations) LRC 106c of Dinos Constantinides, dedicated to Stathis Mavrommatis. This work is based on a Greek folk tune employing modal scales and rhythms which are abundant in Greek music. -Concerto pour soprano saxophone et orchestre à cordes of Evangelos Kokkoris, also dedicated to Stathis Mavrommatis. In the composer's opinion "I have created a world which is not based on today, which doesn't hope to revive yesterday, but a whole world that has escaped from reality like an air breath in a secret way". -Sax Concert N.3 "The Greek" op. 168 for soprano saxophone and string orchestra of Dimitri Nicolau. In this work the musical significance is being suggested during the first two minutes: the opaque, in musical terms, character of the intro is being suddenly interrupted by the "new sound" of saxophone. The soloist's grand cadenza transforms the atmosphere and leads to a place one may call "warm Mediterranean music". The production is being deemed excellent and deserving of attracting even a not initiated audience into the contemporary music space. NOTICE OF AWARD The album (CD), put into circulation by LYRA CLASSICS, "Three Greek Concertos for Soprano Saxophone and String Orchestra" of D.Constantinides, E.Kokkoris and D.Nikolau, interpreted by the saxophonist Stathis Mavrommatis and the National Symphony Orchestra of the Bulgarian Radio under the direction of A.Panaghiotopoulos, was honored by Union of Greek Critics for Drama and Music as a nominee for the 2010 Music Awards.
