El Matador album review by the Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin Spelunkers provide a lot of meat on 'El Matador' By Dave Edick • Press & Sun-Bulletin • May 7, 2008 The Spelunkers, 'El Matador' The Southern Tier is brimming with a wealth of gifted blues and country-rock bands. One such group is the Owego-based Spelunkers. Already well-known in the region for it's engaging crowd-participation performances, the quartet takes center ring in the studio with 'El Matador,' a winsome eight-pack featuring the band's infectious blend of breezy country and 1960s-'70s folk/rock. But wait, there's more -- they also mine Phish-flickering jams, scrambled Spin Doctors, spirited Latin and rousing bell-bottom blues during the disc's exhilarating, 40-minute joyride. At their core, The Spelunkers are Tom Sickler (guitar, keyboard, vocals), Ryan Marchewka (bass, vocals), guitarist Jim Gale and drummer Tom Sheehy. Adding energizing cameos are local bluesman Pinecone Fletcher and mandolin and accordion specialist Brian O'Connell. They're at their bluesy best on the 'Ramblin' Man' roll of 'Tore Down,' made grittier with Fletcher sittin' in on lead guitar. One highlight that tugs at the heart, 'How Long,' moves in a light country flow that belies it's weighty lyrical double-entendre of love and nationalism. Politics are in play on both 'Wake-Up,' a '60's-protest-style indictment of corrupt leadership, and 'Lost,' which canters through Jackson Browne territory. Then it's just for fun on the funky country/space jam 'Sausage & Biscuits,' reverently juiced by bursts of Doors keyboards with eccentric trimmings. But shimmering the brightest among 'El Matador's' jewels is the title track, a bullfighter's spicy tale that sizzles in Fletcher's impeccable Spanish guitar heat. Throughout 'El Matador,' The Spelunkers take the bull by the horns with flashy flourishes that keep the adrenaline going. RATING: *** (out of four)
