Songs from the Southwest
These are songs dedicated to the magnificent but threatened wilderness of southwest Tasmania. This is still a place of wild pristine beauty. This is a land of giant 100m (over 300ft) flowering eucalypts- the tallest hardwoods in the world, wild ocean beaches, dense rainforests, snowcapped mountains and strange creatures unique to this distant corner of the world. The songs celebrate and yet warm against it's continued exploitation and destruction. You would think the mass destruction of 500 year old trees would simply not occur in this day and age in the nation of Australia. If you thought this country was environmentally responsible you were mistaken. For years clear felling has been occurring on the fringes of the Tasmanian wilderness area. Huge forests are bulldozed and incinerated, wildlife is poisoned with 1080 and vast areas converted to plantation monoculture. This destruction is subsidised by government, encourged by corrupt politicians for the profit of big business. If this album can encourage people to become engaged in the issues surreounding this beautiful but fragile place it will be a sucess. Other songs on the album were conceived at different times prior to the authors engagement in the above issue. The songs are a collection of different moods and places and deal with the joy and adventure of travel and the sadness of lost romance. I hope you can enjoy the album and at the same time look beyong and behind it.
