Shutters' debut ep, entitled 'home', represents the delicate balance of acoustic and electronic elements and traditional and current influences that the band incorporates. The album includes an array of instrumentation, including cello, upright bass, glockenspiel, and various synthesizers along with electric guitars and drums. Recorded at RokBox Studios in Philadelphia and co-produced by engineer, producer, and musician Lance Davis, the ep also features guest appearances by locals Tim Conley (As Human, Grimace Federation), Chris Orescan (Never Syntax), and Stephen Rockwell (Chelsea Mitchell). Shutters began in 2007 as a vehicle for the original music of Emmett Lindsay, a Philadelphia based singer-songwriter. Evolving as a rhythm-driven band, Shutters animates the broad mosaic of melodies and lyrics that Lindsay has created. Their varied harmonies allude to jazz, electronic, acoustic and classical training, with band members collaborating on all arrangements. As lead singer, Lindsay takes the reins on either guitar or piano with vocal support from sister and cellist Chloe Gallagher and bassist Dan Manchester. Unplugged or electrified, this smart musical trio comes to life behind the lithe energy of drummer Ben Brown. 'Take the captivating intensity of Elliott Smith and roots rock feel of John Butler Trio and you have Newtown's Emmett Lindsay. Elements of various musical genres can be heard in Lindsay's songwriting, which is influenced by his extensive training in classical piano...The listener is drawn in by Lindsay's voice, which shifts between haunting spoken whispers and grooving melodies, making him a compelling and hypnotic storyteller.' - Deli Magazine, Philadelphia 'Shutters is a band out of the greater Philadelphia area whom I had the pleasure of seeing perform in Vineland, NJ a few weeks back. They're led by singer/songwriter/artist/talented man Emmett Lindsay. Emmett, a pianist, truly hypnotized me with his retro tones, heavy with delay and full of body...Lindsay is obviously a big believer in Bob Dylan and his unique sound. And, if you can follow along, you'll surely find a clever line or two and often a well told narrative to go with it. Shutters is a truly 'artsy' band if such a thing exists: everything from their ambiance on stage, to Lindsay sketching off stage during the other band's sets, to the unbelievably intricate designs on the band's tee-shirts, to the absolutely perfect depiction of the quintessential lounge band lend to the experience Shutters provide it's' audience...see them live and understand why they're worth a couple paragraphs here.' THE SKINNY: Shutters are a hugely jazz and funk centric group with a vocal focus on spoken word, and quick, melodic narratives.
