Balance in Transformation
QUICK HIT: What if Patty Smith went heavy metal. Yeah, it's that cool. Dallastown based, Shattered Beneath the Shade's newest album, "Balance In Transformation" hasn't left my car stereo for 3 days now. All I gotta say is... vocalist Tara Seaks is a freakin' SCREAMING GODDESS! I'm sure others will simply catagorize these guys as "metal" or the more generic "alternative," but I'll respectfully disagree. This band is infusing poetry, prog bass lines, a good mix of melodic and grinding guitars ... and most of all ... TARA! Her singing covers a range that sometimes reminds me of Patty Smith's punk snarl, the grace of Melora Creager (of Rasputina) and other times bone crushing screams. TARA TARA TARA!!! She makes this band. Holy &%*, she's amazing. Imagine your punk-ass kid sister fronting a prog metal band (with a few 1980's new wave additions). Sneers, cries, mascara streaming down, middle finger in the air. Yeah, that's Shattered Beneath the Shade. This stuff is fresh and a great fusion of all the styles listed above. The addition of poetic interludes throughout the album are perfect cherries on top of an already solid project. - Shane Speal from Scrapplehead.com.
