Product notities

Seahorse was a reaction to a series of events that happened during late spring and summer of 1991. It is a snapshot of a period of time from early August 1991 through the end of February 1992. The name Seahorse was derived while sitting around a campfire in Al Ensign's backyard. The "Sea" part was taken from the Sea Hags, a popular Bay Area Band at the time and "horse" is from Crazy Horse. The band first got together in early August 1991, jamming at The Mudshack in Oakland. The original bass player was none other than T. Hallenbeck of Harm Farm; rumor has it he was fired from the band for lack of drug use. Sean Kley, a resident of house where the studio was located, soon became the bass player. The lineup was set. Sean brought a fresh and innovative playing style that brought another dimension to the band; his white Rickenbacker bass soon became a distinctive part of the band's sound. Many of the songs were written in what was called the Bamboo Mediation Center in the backyard. Some had been written earlier by Ensign. Others were invented by the band during jam sessions. One of the most memorable events of this period was the Oakland Fire in October '91. The fire has encroached to about a mile away from the Studio's location when we were told that "it's burning out of control and headed your way". While the fire never reached us, Campfire Song, which we were in the midst of writing at the time, took on new meaning. A week later, the band played their first show, at party at their rehearsal space, that was punctuated by Ensign crashing the headstock of his Les Paul into a speaker inside the Marshall cabinet! Although the band was only together for a short time, the music lives on the in the many recordings that were made. During several days around Thanksgiving 1991, the band recorded 12 songs on the 16 track at The Mudshack. Many memorable sessions followed, including the Lap Steel overdub inspired by Kessler's whiskey. A three song demo tape was the initial result of those sessions but most of the songs were mixed and released on the first CD released in 2005, 50 Watt Marshall. This collection represents the final 5 songs from that collection, mixed some 17 years later with rare studio outtakes of songs created at rehearsals. The last performance by Seahorse was in Sacramento on leap year day in February, 1992. In March 1992, Al moved to Seattle where he resumed music. Returning to the Bay Area in 1994, he and Lackey recorded some piano pieces at his Mother's house in Point Richmond. She was moving, so everything had been removed except for the piano; so Bill and Al decided it was a great opportunity to record it. Also recorded were with a few songs on acoustic guitar, including Television Mind, a song written by Lackey in High School. These songs were added to this collection as well. After playing together in the Brutal Quartet in the mid Nineties, Kley and Lackey moved out of the house in Oakland in 1997. Both Ensign and Lackey were saddened to hear that in 2005, soon after the first CD was released, that Sean Kley had unexpectedly died in his native Maine. This collection of songs is dedicated to Sean, our brother; we wish he could be here to share this with us.
