From Heart to Heart
The Title song Our Love Is Real: An upbeat & tongue-in-cheek tune juxtaposing the fickle lifestyle of Tinseltown w/ a committed, happy & long-term dating/marriage relationship. From Heart of EU - Prague, violated by Soviet tanks in '68 (on August 21, 43 years ago), to Heart of the Rockies - Salt Lake City, via many countries & places, it's been a long & winding, bumpy & exciting road. Robert's music is also 'From Heart to Heart.' It bridges Pop, Funk, Latin, Roma (Gypsy) & Jazz into a style/genre he coined as a 'Bohemian-Acoustic-Fusion' w/ clever & thoughtful lyrics. His creed is: By trade a geologist, by heart a musician. • Robert's mother was a great performer; she sang w/ Big Bands, did Broadway tunes & played piano. At 13, she made him play classical piano. Next year, the Beatles hit the scene & he switched to guitar. At 17 joined the college 'Big Beat' & Rock & Roll band 'Mars.' • At 19 won the 'Talent Search' show in Prague but chose Freedom over Fame escaping from the Soviet tanks & defected to Switzerland. • Robert taught himself English simply by learning ~ 100 Beatles songs and the long Bob Dylan's ballads & translating them into Czech. Complimented on his English lyrics by listeners & fellow musicians. After that, he learned French & Italian by dating lovely young French/Italian-Swiss ladies & on the road. • In 1975, he placed 3rd in Bern in the Swiss 'Talent Search' show with his own composition sung in CZ. Invited to perform in the Zurich Radio show; joined a talent agency, found a band & spent the next 5 years playing night clubs all over Europe. • In 1982 a year long visit of the USA - backpacked 6 months across the lower 48; since 1984 permanent resident, since 1992 a proud & grateful US citizen. Local performances: The Gallivan Center - Downtown SLC, UofU, UT Arts Festival, Living Tradition Fest & many other local venues. Performed as a guest at the Stockyard Club in Nashville; Riverwalk in St. Antonio, TX; Red Lodge, MT; Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, CA; Old Town San Diego, CA; Chicago, IL & the Big Easy coffee houses, among many others. First influences were the Beatles, CS&N, Mamas & Papas & many of the British and US vocal bands in the 60's - 70's including Stevie Wonder. Later came the jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett; Les Paul, Django Reinhardt, Charlie Byrd, Baden Powell, Paco de Lucia. His dad (Organic Chemistry R&D) listened to Big Bands & Gershwin; his mother to Classical, Broadway & Moravian folklore. Prague in the 60's was an amalgam of urban folk, jazz, music theaters & pop. Traveling across Europe, he soaked up all the local urban & traditional music. In 10 more years, he began to play & write sambas, rumbas & bossa novas. In '75, jammed w/ Led Zeppelin vacationing in Les Diablerets in the Swiss Alps.
