The Way Things Are
This CD was done in 2006 in Nashville . I have done others but this was the first one featuring me doing every song. I spent most of my young life playing music first with rock and rollers in the late 60's and early 70's,then in the mid 70's the Urban Cowboy craze hit and I became locally successful with 'The Sister Kate Band' a country /country rock band. And after 5 yrs. Of touring the corn belt and opening for a number of named act's the band folded. Being a drummer /lead vocalist by trade I was picked up by two guys that I would spend the next ten years of my life playing music with. One guy had just moved back from LA where he had been the keyboard player and sang in the R&B /soul band called Rufus /with Chaka Kan. The other was a steel guitar player who played guitar and fiddle and sang, and had played in bands whose members had gone on to play with The likes of REO Speedwagon. We grabbed a singing bass player and toured under the name, 'The Illinois Band' For the next ten years. We wrote our own songs and opened for lots of good talent but never could seem to get our foot back in the door . We were featured as one of the three top up and coming country bands in the Nashville Music Association's annual showcase in 1985 at the Cannery in Nashville. Label reps and reps from ASCAP and BMI were in attendance. We Had an Album out called ' Runaway' [on vinyl no less] But it never made Bill Boards Hot 100. After many swings of the bat we went our own ways in the early 90's. We still keep in touch. But rarely see one another . I started playing drums for a local band called 'The Toasters' Soon after, playing some R&B and southern rock. Then I joined 'The Reverend Robert Blues Band' in the mid 90's and played R&B rooms and house gigs until in 2003 when The Sister Kate Band gave it another shot . We all new it was just for fun this time around but I wasn't done making records . When I was with SKB in the 70's we met and became friends with members of 'The Amazing Rhythm Aces ' whose big hit was 'Third Rate Romance' and in 2004 I had occasion to renew this life long friendship with the bass player 'Jeff tick Davis' And their original guitar player 'Barry yrd Burton. They invited me to Nashville to make an album of my favorite cover songs and originals. They play with me on this CD. Along with Michael Webb,Gary Allan's keyboard player at the time and Brian Owings the soon to be drummer for Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band. The CD also features my guitar player from SKB, GW Wise on back up vocals and guitar. Steel Guitar duties Are performed by steel guitar legend John Sawyer From 'The Sawyer Bros. Band' and the 16 piece Baptist,Christian, Methodist choir, featuring members that have sang back up for many artists over the years, joined me on three of the songs on the record two of which were originals. This is a record that will grow on you. It was produced by Me,engineered by Brian Epps,[Jason Aldean's Engineer] at Fireside studio in Nashville and Treasure Isle Studio In Brentwood Tn.
