All of the pieces on the CD except the last two were originally written as progressive melodic exercises in the first position for beginning and intermediate violin students, to help them learn to play better in tune. Most were composed in 2004, although some were composed in the years since, including the last two, written in 2007. Early in the process of creating these melodies, I began adding chords to the parts. Because the accompaniments are not written out, however, the accompanist must improvise parts based on the chords and the melodies. The artistry of Jodi Marshall, the masterful classical and jazz pianist with whom I recorded, speaks for itself. A newspaper review of the CD described the music as 'uniformly unpretentious, harmonious, and whistle-along pleasing to the ear.'
