Product notities

" Refugee " From the archives of Coda Masters, never released to the public, comes a group of songs by this amazing group. Why never released? Brother and sisters, Heather, Romona and Adam Garvin and their good friend, guitarist, Jeff Robertson had been fooling around with music for years for their own pleasure. Jeff came to stay at my home for a time and he mentioned the Garvin's' to me. I ask him to bring them to the studio and see what's there. He did and WOW! What exceptional talent. Let's make an album! OK! During the recording of the album, brother Adam, passed away, and of course the kids were devastated. They didn't want to do anything without brother Adam. So we shelved the project. Recently, going through the library looking for something else, I ran across the masters that we had recorded and mixed out. I put it on the machine, not expecting to much, after all it was recorded in 1988 on an 8 track and mixed down to 15ips stereo. Analog tape starts loosing the high-end 3 seconds after it's recorded, so 21 years later you don't expect too much. I thought this stuff sounds more like today than yesterday so I transferred it into Logic Pro 7 -Logic 9 to see if it could be brought back to some degree of acceptability. It worked pretty darn good, but then Logic pro 7 and Logic 9 is amazing! Thanks Apple/Mac. Let me tell you a bit more about the people and the songs: To say Jeff Robertson is a good guitar player doesn't get it done. He set on top of a mountain for the better part of a year and did nothing but practice scales until he could play them faster than one would think humanly possible. And it didn't hurt that he has an excellent ear. Jeff played lead guitar on this album and did a bit of singing with Heather on "I Believe" and "This Is Yesterday". Heather Garvin's voice reminds me of the late Yma Sumac, a Peruvian singer who had a 4 and ½ octave range and was said to be the best female vocalist ever. Heather does some vocal gymnastics on this album and makes one say: "How did she do that?" Nobody but Sumac can do that! Heather is as clear as a bell and the pitch and timing are right-on. Romona's voice is silk smooth. She handles a ballad like Karen Carpenter, rich and full, demanding listen to me I've got something to say. Oh yeah, and she's one good-looking woman. Adam. I miss that guy. His voice was raspy, but I really liked it. Different, different, different! He told a story in a new way. Not a trained singer, but he didn't need that. Just give him a track and let him go. During the recording of "It Takes Two" in the first instrumental break Adam started literally yelling. Heather, always never one to hold back said: "What in the hell is he doing?" All of us went into the vocal booth and Adam was in a trance. I mean gone! I said: "Doesn't matter, I like it - Time Out!" I walked across the street to the High School and ask to borrow a cheerleader megaphone. Adam took to that thing like it was part of his vocal chords. Later Adam told me that he didn't think his girlfriend in the song was listening to him so he decided he'd yell at her! Talk about different....I think you will get a kick out of this. Adam was also a very good artist. He brought me a painting that he had done of a wizard. I hung it in the studio. It's still there. Every time I pass it I have fond memories of Adam Garvin. Another of their friends, Mike Farlow, sit in to play slide guitar on the song "Leaving You To Get Even". Mike Clark of the group CULLOWHEE" was in the studio when we recorded "In The Nightshade" and he added some excellent scat vocals on the end. Thanks Mike! Hope you guys get a kick out of this little bit of the past that I found in the dusty tape vault. Coda Masters / Gerald Nelson.
