Impending insanity. Imagine watching someone grapple with a mind that's about 2 steps away from insanity; imagine knowing a train wreck will happen; and you're sitting back, just waiting and watching. Rabid's latest CD, skull, paints a bleak picture of a mind on the edge, barely hanging on and sometimes slipping away from reality. Musically, skull is in a class by itself. There are definite 80's hair band influences, yet it has a fresh new sound. It has traces of Bon Scott-era AC/DC with Judas Priest like chords here and there, but with a loose, bouncy punk vibe along the lines of the Strokes - sort of a Good Charlotte meets Iggy Pop. It's part metal, part hard rock, with influences from across the 20th century and beyond. The guitar sounds vintage, like they're using old amps or something, but it never sounds dated. More on the songs: You Got A Right - Sometimes homeless people do crazy things. It can even become a media spectacle. Don't people realize that we all have the potential to go crazy? The Morning After - Being a truant, who dances like Fred Astaire and parties all night, can be very fun. Your parents may not approve though. Check It Out - When we rush into relationships too fast, things can go well, but more often they do not. Talk About Your Problems - Know someone who does nothing but piss and moan and complain? Playing this song for them might not change anything, but it could make you feel better. Defiance - The title says it all. It's about being defiant - to parents, to society, to the establishment, to any 'normal' way of doing things. It doesn't always lead to killing someone, butthead! Macabre - The goblins are coming. What are those screaming noises in the back of your mind? Vivisector - Vivisection is operating on the living in order to gain knowledge of pathological or physiological processes. This is a story about one who cuts people and their lives into bloody little peices for reasons only he knows. Motor Bike Riding - Motor bike riding is a lot of fun, but sometimes it only offers a temporary getaway. What's It Gonna Take - War and injustice both create a viscious, never-ending cycle of hate and destruction. The Beer Song - A drinking song suitable for pubs everywhere. All the fun of a bar brawl lives on in song. Shave Me - She's a freak who likes to shave her men like Mr. Clean. She, on the other hand, has a furry butt. The Obscene - Everyone knows the occult is dangerous, and those involved are not unlike the walking dead. Don't Leave Me Here - A lot of women have had stalker experiences at some point in their lives. There is nothing funny about it.
