Wings of Mercy
Quill is a Seattle based Christian acoustic band. The leader and main songwriter, Jeff Quill, was raised at St. Joseph's Orphanage in Cincinnati. He was trained as a child in the Gregorian Chants and classical music. The nuns grounded him in everything from Foster to McCartney. When asked what his main musical influences are, he answers, 'It's pretty much limited to the Western Hemisphere.' Poetry, from Milton to ee cummings, has been his passion and study for decades. Consequently, he brings a secular, poetic discipline to Christian lyric writing that distinguishes his songs from most contemporary Christian music. He began writing songs in 1964 for pop quartet 'the Beethoven's' The song, Abba, Dadda, is based on a birthday tune written for the Head priest of St. Joe's. Some twenty years later it was rewritten to the Father who never leaves us. Because of a profound encounter with Christ, Jeff's music is driven by themes of divine love. Grace, intimate and extreme, is the soul of his work. Don Kirby began playing with Jeff in 1988. During his college days at the University of Washington he studied privately under some of the great jazz bassists of our time. Even with such a strong jazz background, his range of songwriting style is broad. This can be heard in the Celtic hints of the song In the Midst . Others on the CD Wings of Mercy are: Jeanne Whitney, an artist of exquisite harmonies, appearing with her daughter Beth. Rick Jacobson is known around the northwest for his drum work with the rock and blues band Myles From Chicago. Lindsay Jacobson playing conga, is Ricks daughter. Also on drums, from the original Georgia, a man who has sat in session with BBKing, Vanek Arutiunov. The violinist on In The Midst is Kristen Forster, popular in northwest folk and bluegrass circles she played and recorded with The Amen Corner. On the flute is the talented Ruth Bradshaw of the Bradshaw Trio. Jeff's friend Barbara Erlandson began playing the accordion at nine years old.....she's older than that now. Tobin Schindler, the cellist, is twelve years old going on fifty. And there's a choir directed by Jeff's lovely wife, Gayle, that goes on till next Sunday. All these folks perform in this CD for the very simple and overpowering reason that God has touched them with an outrageous love about which the must sing. We recommend listening to this music while you rest quietly. As you listen, may Christ carry your soul on wings of mercy into the waiting arms of God.
