Higher Than Life
Protoavis is an alternative rock band from Northern New Jersey formed in 2010 by Joe Berrigan (Lead Vocals & Bass), Artie Desbiens (Guitars), and Chris Koutouzakis (Drums). Originally working under the Protoavis moniker as a solo artist, Joe Berrigan for many years unsucessfully tried to recruit the right musicians to form a band with. After a slew of musicians that never worked out, Joe Berrigan met Art Desbiens, a guitarist who shared the same musical vision and passion for music as him. Drummer Chris Koutouzakis soon joined the band to complete the line-up. HIgher Than Life is an album with a unique sound that fuses a vintage melodic classic rock sound with the heaviness of 1990's alternative rock and grunge. The music uses simple song structures with intricate guitar riffs and soloing, trying to bring back the guitar solo back into music that is absent from the new music that comes out today. The band uses simple but creative drum work, and intricate melodic bass lines which holds the songs together. With the band producing the record themselves, they decided to go for a raw, dynamic sounding record along the lines of 1970's Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, and Nirvana's raw and abrasive In Utero. The band decided that the music industry is littered with too many Nickleback sound alike bands, and decided against an overproduced, polished and overcompressed record, in lieu a more honest, raw, and dynamic record. The record starts off with the loud, upbeat, and riffy 'Dead Sea Jackals', a song in response to the BP Gulf Coast Disaster that happened last year, followed by the thrashing mid-tempo 'Dying By Inches' and the slow, dirgeful but heavy 'Oz'. 'Love' and 'Somerset' soon follow and demonstrate that the band does have a more laid back and lighter edge. After a handful of a few more mid-tempo catchy rock tracks, the album climaxes with the thrashing drum-heavy 'Ready, Shoot, Aim, Fire!'. The record ends with the slow and atmospheric 10 and a half minute and meloncholoy'This Winter' which allows one to get lost in psychodelic and mesmorizing droning guitars. This is a band people should keep their eye on, as they are building a solid fan base, and playing shows all over their local region and around the country.
