Past One Second at a Time
The Past, One Second At A Time is the follow-up to Princess Ugly's well-received debut, We Knew It Was Perfect. Here, main ugly J. Christopher-Rome has brought to the table a collection of songs exploring similar themes of strained emotions, fully realized by multi-instrumentalist Christopher Moncrieffe, to create a solid experience--a compelling listen from start to finish. Ali Wesley provides backing vocals that give visions, and the whole lends itself to headphone listening; still, a few songs individually make their case to be an ideal choice for that next 'mix-tape,' the one where you let the songs' music and lyrics do the speaking for you. That Princess Ugly exist happily outside of the box--impervious to (or ignorant of?) current musical trends-- makes every release that much more endearing. Surely their influences are recognizable, but the end result is uniquely their own.
