Whole New Brand of Hero
The Potentials and the Battle for CD Baby Written by Matthew Adams Picture it. Fairfax. 2001. Benjamin David, a lonely displaced teenager with a compulsion to rock out in his bedroom, was becoming more and more horrified with the emo scene infecting his high school. In retaliation, he decided to start his own rock band to bring his heroes such as Nirvana, The Beatles, Queen and Aerosmith together as one. The only problem was finding the right people to help take up the fight. When all hope seemed lost and the prozac ran low, Benjamin found Ryan Wagner. It was in this disillusioned soccer player that he saw great potential. Not only did Ryan have the same affinity for rock n' roll as Benjamin, but his style brought together such guitar gods as Jimi Hendrix and Tom Morello. Together, with a rotating cast of musicians, The Potentials were born. And though the start of college normally means the end of high school bands, Benjamin and Ryan decided to forge on. Abroad, they searched far and wide for a third permanent member. It is at a punk show, that Benjamin once again saw potential in Andrew Goodwin, the most tightest, the most sickest, and most illest drummer in all of Fredericksburg. Channeling his punk-rock energy to straight-up rock n' roll proved a success, thus completing the lineup of the band. As they victoriously battled their way through music scenes in Fredericksburg and the Blacksburg, respective domains of Mary Washington and VA Tech, they managed to accomplish much. They were featured in local publications, finished in the top 10 in the John Tucker Must Die Contest (national), and were runner-ups in VH1's Song of the Year contest. Through all of this they also independently released the EP 'A Whole New Brand of Hero' (enclosed). However, all was not well, for they had to return to Fairfax from a near 3 year absence. The thing about going home is that you are never the same as when you left. Fortunately, they were also that much better. Countless shows and basement sessions made them that much stronger, wiser, and more determined to rock a crowd with the hopes of vanquishing any and all traces of the evil that is emo. As of October 30, 2007, The Potentials hope to continue their journey through CD Baby.
