Joaquín Rodrigo (1901-1999) was a prolific composer whose remarkable guitar concerto, the famous Concierto de Aranjuez, brought Spanish music to the attention of a wide international public. Yet Rodrigo deserves appreciation for many masterpieces among his output of nearly 200 compositions. These CDs encompass a representative selection of his music, illustrating the immense variety and quality of the orchestral, choral and instrumental pieces written over the course of a long artistic career. Combined with an essay by Graham Wade, author of the first Rodrigo biography in the English language, this provides an excellent portrait of one of the greatest twentieth-century Spanish composers.
