Product notities

Phringe: A nonsense word, made up on a whim in a Zozo hut next to a pool in the shadow of what is, presumably, the only hill in Lonehill, Johannesburg. Mellow Drama: The result of nearly two year's hard work and an eclectic collection of music that should appeal to a very wide market. Includes power ballads ('Dry', 'Saved Again'), love songs ('Halo', 'Need'), pub rock ('Fuel'), folk ('Come What May', 'Not Afraid'), old-style rock 'n roll ('Don't Tell Me You Are Not The One Because You Are') and even a dance-floor stomper ('Download'). All songs are original, written by Bruce Dennill and Antony Adelaar. The album was recorded at Barking Dog Studios in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is produced, engineered and mastered by Ralph Martin. The band: Bruce Dennill / vocals, rhythm guitar Residence: London, England Musical influences: Sting, Dave Matthews, Crowded House, James Taylor, Paul Simon A singer-songwriter with an acoustic guitar, a bunch of verses and choruses on A4, lined paper (none of that scribbles-on-a-napkin business, thank you) and a yen to recreate in real terms what he had been hearing in his head for some time, to the detriment of his largely random sleep patterns. Antony Adelaar / lead & rhythm guitar, backing vocals Residence: Johannesburg, South Africa Musical influences: Nine Days, Delirious, Gary Moore, Crowded House, Del Amitri, Ezio, Steven Curtis Chapman Owner of a ridiculous lemon-yellow Washburn electric guitar with a bright red strap, but blessed with the skills to outshine even this get-up. Writer of songs with (surprise!) extra guitar bits in them and singer of gap-filling harmonies. Newly married, and so forced to stop referring to his shiny black Les Paul as 'my first wife'. Kate Dennill / backing vocals Residence: London, England Musical influences: Delirious, Sheryl Crow, Barbra Streisand, Le Miserables, Godspell Wife to Bruce and co-founder (with him) of the band. Handles the roles of backing singer, muse and gently persuasive critic with elegant ease. Known to shake traditional African maracas and precision-engineered American tambourines from time to time. Wearer of spangly shirts and leather pants, but you'll have to come to the gigs to see that... Cliff Wright / bass Residence: Perth, Australia Musical influences: Abraham Laboreal, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Deacon, Stan Rawls Laid-back bassist with a temperamental amplifier and a stylishly retro wardrobe. Generally stands as far as the size of the stage will allow away from the rest of the band during performances, possibly because they are dressed in such a way as to embarrass him. Waits until the third take in the studio to debut what becomes that song's final bassline. Nic Tudor / drums Residence: Johannesburg, South Africa Musical influences: Collective Soul, Pearl Jam, Muse, Reef, Green Day Bare-footed (or socks, but never shoes) drummer, nearly impossible to photograph with his mouth closed. As entertaining as the rest of the band combined for his wide array of wacky in-song facial expressions. Able to name the drummers from almost any reasonably well-known band on the planet and arguably the world's best air guitarist. Then and Now: Conceived in 1998, Phringe started as an acoustic cover-band, enjoying the melodic works of Jars of Clay, Oasis and Crowded House. In 1999, the realisation of increasing amounts of original material, as well as the development of a strong and distinctive sound, resulted in the group's debut recording endeavor. This took the form of a 6-track EP entitled Window Seat, which was soon to be made available to community radio stations, and fans at performances. The two years that followed saw invitational Phringe performances, and a period of focused attention on the songs that were to become the soundtrack for a discerning generation. This, in the form of a 13-track album entitled Mellow Drama, recorded between 22 January 2001 and 27 June 2002. In March 2003, Phringe were signed by USM Records in Johannesburg.
