Now & Then
Horses. Creatures possessing powerful and rhythmic flight. Yet they will let us into they're world and let us tame them and even ride them. Why do they ultimately learn to trust a dominant omnivore to ride upon their backs and accept us into their herd? No one really knows. Although some will say they do. I have lived with horses for many years. Very well trained ones too. Yet their nature remains quite mysterious to me. Music. Intervals and harmonies possessing a powerful and rhythmic flight. It's power and rhythm have moved across the earth since the beginning of time. We take it all the way in and find ourselves moved by it inexplicably. Why does music affect us so? No one really knows. Although some will say they do. I have been enthralled by it's power since early childhood. Yet it's nature remains quite mysterious to me. I've been riding horses since I was a boy. I remember my first trail rides with my father at Bethpage State Park. And riding at summer camp upstate New York. I loved the way the rhythm and the quiet, only broken by my horses gait, made me feel. Now I ride my horse on our ranch, Hill Country Equestrian Lodge and through my gate into the State Natural Area. I love the way it makes me feel. I remember hearing The Everly Brothers and Rickey Nelson and of course The Beatles for the first time. I remember where I was and who I was with. I remember as a kid rehearsing with my first band, The Shings, in my basement. And our first paid gig at the block party one summer. My dad booked us. I still try to play everyday. I have always loved the way the rhythm and the intervals and the harmonies make me feel. And so I offer you NOW AND THEN, an anthology of my musical journey across this country and across time. I'd like to thank Sam Swank ( Ray Wiley Hubbard, Olivia Newton John) for his friendship and acoustic guitars on A CASE FOR LOVE, Steve Weisberg (John Denver) for lead acoustic guitar on NEVER BE ALONE AGAIN, the session musicians at Sugar Hill for sharing their talents on COCOMO, HARD LUCK AND TROUBLE, and ROCK AND ROLL MAN, the musicians from my LA days including Danny Flayhive on bass for playing on TAKE ME AS I AM and HEAT OF LOVE.. I NEED YOU ALL, ME AND MY HORSE, SMOKY BAR and LUCKY ONE were recently recorded solo acoustic and engineered by Tommy Detamore who also mastered NOW AND THEN at Cherry Ridge Studio. Special thanks to: Paul Hoffman, Doug Klein ( Lonesome Coyotes ), Al "Otis" Manning, the late great Buddy Sims, Tony Sheppard, our wonderful friends and guests at HILL COUNTRY EQUESTRIAN LODGE, and especially Dianne Lindig without whose encouragement and love, NOW AND THEN would never have happened. I'd also like to thank my friends everywhere who speak the language of the heart. Peace, Peter Lovett What people are saying about Peter Lovett and NOW AND THEN: 'Really well done.
