Music for bassoon and cello!? That alone seems like a Paradox. The first question many people have for us is usually, 'Is there anything composed for cello and bassoon?' The short answer is 'not much' - at least in comparison to more mainstream instrumentations. But we are blessed that Mozart seemed to think this was a viable combination. Other composers throughout the centuries have continued to write music for cello and bassoon as well. As of 1993, there were 44 different composers who had composed 89 works for bassoon and cello. Several works on this CD have been written specifically for us within the past decade. We are also fortunate that our individual instruments have had hundreds of duets composed for them - everything from pedagogical exercises to double concertos. Many of these works are very playable (and listenable!) on bassoon and cello. On this recording you will find an eclectic mix of music - ranging from classical, jazz, folk, to avante-garde. So while cello and bassoon is a more unusual combination, it is the only duo for us, both musically and personally - after all, we are a 'pair o' docs'!
