Originally conceived as the supporting band for lead vocalist and acoustic guitar player, Nick Africano, Over/Under quickly evolved into the multi-faceted, genre-mixing ensemble it is today. Their music expresses a thoughtful pastiche of influences, emulations, and diverse artistic visions ranging from Ray Charles to Mississippi John Hurt, from Nina Simone to The Black Crowes. Their lyrics evoke the narrative tradition of a younger Tom Waits, telling stories through series of vignettes. The resulting collection of songs, as displayed in their debut EP, Line Out, manifests an inventive, urban folk- blues that comfortably moves between simplicity and sophistication. Based in Minneapolis, Over/Under has attracted attention and respect within the local circuit, garnering reviews in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, CityPages, and the Pulse, and sharing bills with local veterans such as Spider John Koerner, Willie Murphy, Ike Riley, The Pines, and a diverse group of national acts including Clem Snide, Cloud Cult, The M's, and Backyard Tire Fire.
