All Having Reasons
Born in Esperance on the south west coast of Australia, a wild and majestic coastline, Otway's formative years were spent in a small country town called Brookton where he learnt the timeless importance of space, and took seeing the stars for granted. High school years were marked by the peaceful detachment of the jarrah forrests to the east of Perth in Lesmurdie. After learning classical piano from the age of 6 until his late teens, the guitar seemed a more practical instrument. Playing in churches and with friends in garage bands became a fun pastime in between surf sessions and uni. Performing someone else's ideas (ie covers) however seemed odd and strangely difficult. The skill of songwriting came naturally but slowly, and it was not until his move to crowded, busy Europe that the orange really started to be squeezed. Songs flowed thick and fast with more ideas than time to record them. Gigs and jam sessions abounded with the numerous musicians drifting through Paris. Recording and mixing was another skill which came naturally (helped to an extent by an engineering degree). The first full length album 'All Having Reasons' was finished for limited release in 2008 but Otway wasn't totally satisfied with the results and took another year to Polish the production. The digital version was released late 2009 on iTunes and the hardcopy in June 2010 (with new artwork by Melbourne artist Luci Everett). The material speaks of transition from the wide open spaces and tight religious expectations of a conservative Australian upbringing and how this exploded on contact with the tight confines and wide moral spaces of western Europe. Emmancipation with a sense of wonder and light-hearted self awareness. Otway Ross are currently in the studio recording some of the backlog of songs.
