Whenever a musician is asked to describe their particular 'sound' or 'style', it is not always a simple thing to do. That it is certainly the case with Boston based band Oddway. Formed in the spring of 2002 by guitarist Ryan Ordway and vocalist Petrina Foley, the two began writing songs together and brought in Ryan's former high school band mate Mat Maier on bass. Completing the line-up in the summer of 2003 with drummer Jared Steer, the band headed into the studio to start work on their debut album 'Careless Behavior'. Oddway's sound can be described as a menu of styles ranging from rock to reggae, funk to blues, and a hint of jazz. Each song on 'Careless Behavior' brings the listener to new places, creating new vibes. With Chris Magruder, engineer/producer (Percy Hill) behind the board, with his talent and inspiration he gives 'Careless Behavior' the live, natural sound it needs to truely represent Oddway as a whole. With comparisons to Grace Slick and Fiona Apple, lead vocalist Petrina Foley 's unique and powerful delivery of crafty melodic hooks, and inspiring lyrics set the tone for the band. Ryan Ordway's raw energy on guitar and tasteful simplistic playing are a memorable attribute Holding down the bottom end is Mat Maier' solid, catchy basslines with the intense but smooth grooves of drummer Jared Steer. Nate Wilson on keys ( Jammy winner! Percy Hilland Reid Genauer of StrangeFolk) and Kristin Miller on cello giving an amazing performance that takes the album to new heights. An honest approach of openmindedness has been the direction Oddway has taken and will continue to take as they emerge onto the New England music scene and beyond as a strong, driving force.
