NIGI SATO, lyric soprano, was born in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to New York to study at the Juilliard School. She has performed her unique repertoire around the world with great orchestras and accompanists. Her operatic roles have included Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, Liu in Turnadot, Nedda in Pagliacci and Micaela in Carmen. THE MUSIC: I was given the music for Salve Regina in 1971 by the Director of the Morgan Library. He heard me sing while I was studying at Juilliard and he loved my voice. It is a beautiful offertorium written bgy Schubert in 1819. i opened my Lndon Debut with Salve Regina, Opus 153 accompanied by the Gregorian String Quartet. It was at the suggestion of Felix Popper, conductor and music administrator at the New York City Opera, that I sang the soprano solo in the 1975 production of Ein Deutsches Requiem with the Rhode Island Symphony. This most beautiful requiem was composed by Brahms after his mother's death, writing the libretto himself in German rather than the traditional Latin. Desdemona is one of Verdi'smost demanding roles both vocally and dramatically. I was cast as Desdemona in the Zurich Opera Haus production of Otello in May 1979. I have sung Cio-Cio-San from Madama Butterfly many times. This performance on December 7, 1979 inaugurated the new Main Hall Auditorium at Wagner College in New York. -Nigi Sato THE PROGRAM: 1.
