The Nairobi Trio (the name derives from the mechanical primate band featured on The Ernie Kovacs Show of the 1950s), is the brainchild of drummer Jeff Donavan and bassist Larry Muradian. Now known as the Donavan/Muradian Quintet, the two Californians have played together for 25 years throughout the Pasadena area and beyond. In 1998 they issued an album of standards penned by jazz greats aka Coltrane, Cannonball, Wayne Shorter, et al. Under the apt title 'Straight Ahead'. With tenorman- Andy Suzuki (Dave Brubeck,Chick Corea), trumpeter-Steve Huffsteter (Stan Kenton),and pianist- Curtis Brengle (Rick Braun). The music on this disc comes straight out of the Brown/Roach hard bop stylebook with some additional nods to the Blue Note roster of the late 50s and early 60s; and it greets this reviewers (self-confessedly conservative) ears, bruised by the proliferation of so much avant noisemaking, as pure delight. This disc swings, highly recomended stuff.
