Product notities

"Interplanetary war is over if you want it," says Monster Island Plus as they set sail with the bold release of their full-length, independent recording, "Del Otro Galaxia." The CD is a collaborative effort between founding University of North Texas alumni members Edward Holland (vocals, drums, percussion, producer) Tim Pope (vocals, guitars), crewmembers Marc Utter (vocals, guitar, bass guitar, tamboura, sitar, percussion) and Sam McCall (guitars, bass guitar, keyboards, engineer). The recording also features special guests Texas native, Annie Benjamin (vocals, flute) National Folk Alliance songwriter who added her immeasurable talents to the songs, "Shakuhachi" and "Mystic Jugz." Legendary Tokyo guitarist, Takashi O'hashi who embarks on a world tour this year with his rock band, Seikima II provided layers of guitars on "Leaning House" and a new blues ode "Nasty Little Scar." The roots of Monster Island Plus are firmly grounded in acoustic folk honoring the classic music troubadours of the past. A classification for their style of music does not exist but you can label them a hybrid of Hippie Space Folk and Rock, which always made them a great opening band for electric acts. From psychedelic to mock heavy metal their music never took itself serious and their mellow and loud message of unadulterated fun continues to reverberate today. Some of their electric tunes surfaced on the radio stations KNON in Dallas and a few years ago on New Jersey's WMFU without their knowledge by disc jockey and art director of their first release, Mark Allen. After a long, extended shore leave Pope, an IT Manager and Holland, a government paralegal reunited in 2008 to perform at a surprise wedding party in Rockport, Texas. The ever-seasoned pros shook off the space dust and kicked out some acoustic jams, moving one of the guests to tears that night as the music took him back to his carefree youth. This one off show set the gears in motion for a stronger comeback then expected. In October '09, Utter a stable in the Austin bluegrass community rode out to the recording sessions with his sitar and tamboura in tow. McCall journeyed from Colorado with his bag of tricks, Holland jetted from California and they all met on the trail with Pope in north Texas to lay down old and new tracks at a warp speed pace. The recording session hinged on the availability of some cherished material from Star Trek: The Original Series. The crew was able to contact through various channels the infamous character actor, Charles Napier (The Blues Brothers, Silence of the Lambs) who played the character, Adam in the 1969 episode, "The Way to Eden." Napier gave Holland permission to re-record the songs he co-wrote for the episode where space hippies try to take over the USS Enterprise and travel to the fabled planet Eden. Considered to be one of the worst episodes from the entire series, Monster Island Plus contrarily considers it to be one of the best and purchased the rights to the songs from the classic series. The band has always been a little bit left of center and maybe therein is their appeal among musicians and artists. In Denton, at the aptly titled nightclub, The Enterprise, Pope's mother once commented after seeing her son perform, "Where did we go wrong? I know what it is, we let you watch too much Speed Racer when you were growing up!" It was apparent then and now that these musical friends were raised on a fortified diet of 60's, 70's and a tinge of 80's pop culture. "I was like a moth to the flame when I first heard Monster Island Plus and I was grooving to the performance and the audience vibe as they compelled each other making an intense experience that I had not seen before," said Mc Call. I was taken aback asking myself who are these guys it seemed that everyone liked them and I thought they were pretty good. I remember thinking it reminds me of the intensity of seeing the Flaming Lips for the first time where everyone was smiling and mystified by the music. They sounded legit, bizarre and serious about their craft playing the straight men in their own comedy. Pope says, "We always enjoyed playing music from many different genres. UNT was a great place to learn about different types of music. It was an amazing experience getting together with these guys and making music again. The technology has changed but the good old vibe is still there. It was like we were getting together again after just a few weeks rather than many years.' From it's musical beginnings to the final graphic design, done with the gracious assistance of David Lamb this is truly a commemorative classic album made 20 years after the band used to practice, play, and party right on Fry Street in Denton, Texas. "This album is something I always wanted to do, make interesting music and put it in a package that makes people want to give it a listen," says Holland. The project is as much a homage to the hip late 60's and 70's as it is to 80's college campus life and it speaks even broader to the current spirit of independent, musical freedom. Monster Island Plus' "Del Otro Galaxia" from WER1 PRO is available exclusively through monsterislandplus.com and possibly in another part of the solar system in the near distant future. For anyone who wants to feel the magic of loose, tightly structured songs from another galaxy pick up this monstrous, limited release from this little band from north Texas. Your permission to go ashore is granted!
