Living the Dream
Writing requires living. Mark Twain once said, "Authorship is not a trade, it is an inspiration; authorship does not keep an office, it's habitation is all out under the sky, and everywhere the winds are blowing and the sun is shining and the creatures of God are free." Artists live, write, and create through inspiration, through the various and individual forms that it reaches us. Traumatic events, everyday occurrences, worldly discoveries, loss and gain, gives us a universal understanding of life; but it is compassion and empathy that stirs far more deeply within our souls, past our own breath. Not every person in this world understands the artist, or grasps our reasoning in pursuing what we do. My only answer is that there is a drive, a compassion, a want to explore these many emotions; that through living life we also have a need to share it. For many of us, there is no gain, or a real want to gain, but more importantly, it is a release of expression and a desire to communicate. Doctors work to find medicinal cures to many diseases; you could say that the artist works to find cures to many lost souls. Through a multitude of mediums, the arts have a way of causing you to stumble upon revelations, rethink situations, acknowledge your existence, feed your imagination, give birth to creativity, and be physically and emotionally moved. We strive to inspire in the hopes that others seek to instill that same ambition and want to out reach. Whether an author opens you to new cultures, to worlds you never realized existed, or a painter visually causes you to stop and ponder, perhaps a busker captures a pause from your day to day routine, and in enthrallment, you stop to simply enjoy and revel in the moment, or a songwriter gives you good advice from having been there before, or reminds you that you're not alone, all artists and all people eventually find that they have a select purpose within their own medium. Artists are loyal companions who from all different perspectives, openly speak for those who fear exposing themselves publicly, or who cannot find the means to translate their innermost thoughts. We are the bold and misunderstood that travel into the world with an open mind, so that all people can continue to feel and express themselves without being ashamed. I suppose that there are many different reasons for each individual person; I suppose this is mine. I had the revelation recently that this is truly all that I can do; I don't know how to be anything else than what I am. Through my writing which varies between song, poetry, and prose, I hope that you will find whatever it is you wish to find within it; whatever it means to you, I hope that you will always find what you're looking for in all aspects of life.
