A trumpet that flows between the melancholic and the playful.' Josiah Blackmore, Cultural Critic Trumpeter and composer Mike Field is a Toronto-based musician who performs regularly at jazz venues, festivals and on tour both in Canada and internationally. His latest full-length album of original jazz compositions, Ashes, was released in August 2011. Mike feels a responsibility to communicate the melodies he hears inside and this album is a recording of these sounds, arranged for a traditional jazz quintet. It features Carlie Howell on upright bass, Dave Chan on drums, Paul Metcalfe on tenor saxophone and Matt Newton on piano. Although the songs are recently available in a recording, Mike and his band have performed them for several years and exciting concerts, including the Downtown Toronto Jazz Festival two years in a row and on board a ship to Antarctica. Mike began studying trumpet classically at the age of 10. After many years of private lessons with the Toronto Symphony's Bart Woomert, he studied at New York University with Warren Vaché and Laurie Frink.
