What Surrounds Us
'What Surrounds Us' (2010) emanates from the thoughts and scenes that flow through our day-to-day. Combining elements of acoustic, pop, and R&B styles, the e.p. is a fresh blend of old and new. Melodies that are subtly unpredictable, and interestingly lyrical. Sounds that fit together like puzzle pieces, each tone and each color creating something new in the mind's eye. Lyrically, it is honest and hopeful. "Skyscraper" begs the awareness of the rivalry between city and nature - living a life of hurriedness versus breathing deep of the beauty we were created to experience. "Sunrise" reminds us of the hope that each new day brings. "Prayin' for Stoplights" and "Watercolor World" will undoubtedly tap into some of the universal aspects of relationships that can be so fun and yet so frustrating. The simplicity of "I Am Not John" echoes the need to be true to self in the face of pressure to be a Wayne, Cash, or Unitas.
